Segmented turning is my favorite style of woodturning.  They are typically created with layers of wood rings made up with segments cut into trapozoids.  The angles on these trapezoids have to be cut precisely to make gapless rings.  The rings are trued up and glued together to give the rough shape which is then turned to the final form and wall thickness.  Segmented vessels often incorporate a "feature ring" to render them more interesting and hopefully more attractive as shown below.
